December 31st, 2011 11:35 p.m.
The former auror eyed her calendar sitting above the Abby’s financial ledger. She was sure this place would be packed with people celebrating, but she never anticipated this. The Abby was filled to the brim, or rather near capacity. Many muggles and a few people from the realm had made their way over to the bar to ring in the New Year. Boy, was Kara ready for the transition. 2011 had not been too kind to her, and considering everything that happened, she couldn’t wait to switch into the New Year, and have a fresh new start.
She was, however, here solo. She didn’t have any friends here, other than her employees, to share this night with, and frankly, she didn’t care. All she needed was her bottomless martini’s to keep her company. As lonely as it was, Kara just wanted to make it through tonight and then she would just wake up and start making some necessary changes to the Abby, to her life, to everything.
Closing the gigantic book on the desk, Kara tugged on her dress to readjust it as she stood up and started for the main room. When she pushed past the wooden door to the office, she was greeted with the roar of the crowd inhabiting her bar. Laughter, screams, cheers, chatter all mixed into one booming sound of a successful and booming venue. Kara smiled and watched her employees move from table to table, helping every customer in sight. What a night, she thought to herself, and took a sip of her martini.
The scarred one made her way down the stairs into the main part of the floor, and took a seat at the only table she could find that was open, her table in the back corner. This table was slightly separated from everyone, a private little block of space for Kara and any other guest. As she sat down, she looked down at her finger and saw her wedding ring, and started to fiddle with it, turning the band around her finger. She sighed.

New Years was supposed to be a time for celebration, a time to spend with family and loved ones. Unfortunately for Markus it was another day that he had yet to get a break in the case and capture the killer roaming the halls of Hogwarts. Kirsten and her squad were on patrol for the night shift, his boys were presumably doing what boys did and partying it up with their respective house mates, Anne he’d not seen all day and had simply assumed she’d had plans already and was taking a much needed break. The captain let out another sigh. Maybe he should take a couple hours and try and get a clear head…
He fished through his uniforms front pocket for the silver watch he usually kept there only to remember he had given it to his youngest whom had apparently not seen fit to return it yet. That brought a small smile to Markus’ face. Oh to be a kid again and not have the worry or obligations that had settled heavily on his shoulders these days. Well, the time didn’t matter anyway. He assumed it had to be around 11:30pmsince he’d done a round at about 10pm. He was technically supposed to be off for the night so maybe popping out to the Abby for a quick drink and short celebration huzzah would be ok…
So it was not even 5 minutes later that the captain was standing in front of the Abby in a light jacket that was left open (apperation was a wonderful skill), jeans, and a navy blue button down after having told the guard on duty he was stepping out for a few hours. He pushed open the doors and was greeted with a comforting roar of sound that indicated a full, or nearly full house.
The captain didn’t even bother trying to find a table and headed straight for the bar, weaving in and out of groups of people until he could elbow himself some room at the counter. He quickly got the attention of one of the bartenders and ordered a drink. It was there in a blink and once he’d paid for it Markus took a healthy sip of the amber liquid and tried to relax a bit.

“Here you go, K,” one of the young men running the bar had come over to serve Kara her usual glass of red wine. Everyone knew she was a sucker for a good Cabernet Sauvignon, so for a night like New Year’s Eve, Bennett brought her one of the finest wines from the cellar.
Kara offered him a smile and bowed her head slightly, acknowledging his gesture. “Cheers, Ben.” Her fingers found the stem of the glass and she gripped it, twisting it slightly to busy herself nervously by turning the glass on the wooden table. Her eyes were drawn to the crowd; silly muggles interacting with one another. Girls were being girls silly girls: giggling and checking out the male selection in the crowd, and boys were being boys: waiting to be the lucky few picked to be the midnight kiss—or even moreso, that one night stand. There was so much more beyond this world that they didn’t even know about. Kara envied their lives. They weren’t being tracked by a magical implant embedded in their bodies. They were having fun, enjoying life, letting loose. It was something Kara refused to do, denied herself to do even. It was as if she was not allowed to have a good time. How could she? Liam was gone, on holiday or something else, according to the bar patrons and his employees. Kara was alone, and it hurt her to think that solitude was going to be her path yet again.
“Don’t you know him?” Bennett looked over at her with a raised brow.
“Who?” She asked, sipping at her glass of wine. Kara caught sight of Markus a couple of stools down and it caught her by so much surprise that she nearly dumped the wine onto herself. It would have been an ugly mess, considering it was a very expensive, very old and very dark wine. The scarred one pulled the glass back from her lips and made sure to regain her composure. “What the..” She said aloud. Bennett watched her as she examined the familiar man. “You should go see him. Hasn’t said a word to anyone except me. I think he’s alone.”
“Alone,” she repeated.
“Yeah. No one should be alone tonight, love.” Bennett winked.
His lack of company was none of her business, but Kara was wondering why Markus was here alone. With a hesitant nod, she left the stool she had sat in and made her way over to her old partner. It took her a couple of light pushes and she slipped through a couple of crowding friends, but Kara was within arm’s reach, so she tapped him on the shoulder.

His thoughts were wandering all over the place and it was hard to focus them on any one thing. Maybe it was true and he had just been working too hard and the case and everything relating to it was finally taking a toll. Not to mention the feelings Markus was starting to realize he had for a certain blonde and the issue of his wife and her “crew” always underfoot, pestering for more information about current events than he was willing to give. He took another pull on his drink when he felt a hand on his shoulder. His head turned, more an automatic reaction than anything else, and once he recognized who it was that wanted his attention he couldn’t help but smile.
”Kara,” he said with a grin, a faint undertone or relief colored his words. ”Long time no see. How have you been?” He was curious after all. He hadn’t seen nor heard from her since her release, not that that could be blamed on her. Markus had the intent to try and get named her parole officer but then the whole Hogwarts issue had come up and well… he’d lost track. Hopefully everything was going ok, or at the very least not horrible.

“Stole my words exactly,” Kara replied, trying to hide the hurt under the tone of her voice. “I’ve seen better times, but you know that.” After her release, he sent her to a safe house to hide out in until the dust settled. Then, once her home was livable again, she decided to make the move back. It was different moving away from the old lady who made her breakfast every morning and washed her linens every few days, but Kara knew that there was no place like home. Markus’ visits were non-existent and she thought nothing of it; she wasn’t his keeper, after all, and he was a busy man so she couldn’t resent him too much.
Kara took a drink. “What about you then, stranger? What have you been up to these days? I’m sure the Guard has given you more work and less play time, which will be the only excuse you can have to protect yourself from my scorn. You could have at least written and said you were alive. Or phoned…muggles love their phones.”
When she eyed her table across the room, she noticed it was empty. Generally, no one was seated in the owner’s corner booth in a quieter area of the pub, and she was grateful for its placement. They could see, hear and interact with everything, but for the most part it was private. She gestured over towards that area, wondering if he would still be interested in carrying on this reunion elsewhere.

((OOC: Here is the Post Sum Up as authorized by AC/Markus))
A the night went on, the dynamic duo found themselves in the quiet booth she had found. The conversation opened up and they revisited moments they shared in the field. Most of the moments she remembered and cherished, others were memories only he had, new moments for her to learn and believe they were her own experience. It was shame, what they did to her during her imprisonment before, the time her step-father Fierro saved her from that torture. There was pity in Markus' eyes as she struggled to remember some of their missions, long buried underneath the layers and layers of induced forgetfulness. She was still grateful for his words, his company and his patience as she did so.
"You alright?" He asked, scooting in closer to make sure she wasn't in any panic.
"I am...It's just hard for me to believe I'd even do such a thing..." Kara smiled.
The two laughed.
"Come on! It's about to start!" Henrietta dragged the two of them to the television, where they began the excitement for the big countdown.
"What a year..." Markus breathed out.
"Markus...thank you for everything. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you."
Ten... Nine...
"Of course," he smiled at her, his arm around her waist as they joined the cheering crowd in the count.
Two... One... Happy New Year!
They watched as the cameras in London panned over the crowd and once the clock struck twelve, the bell in the pub rang, the cheering roared through the room, confetti was thrown, and everyone celebrated with the traditional kiss of their companion.
Without hesitation, the pair were drawn together for a kiss. It was a harmless, quick peck on the lips. Kara lingered for a beat. When they separated, she was left staring into Markus' heavenly eyes. She gulped. Why did she feel like there was more to it than just that? It was only a kiss, only a brief moment of that obligatory New Years action, but here she was, drawn to her best friend, her partner, and ultimately the man who saved her life.
Acting on a whim, she pulled her partner towards her and kissed him again. This time, she wrapped her arms around his neck and held him closer than before, kissing him with the fiery passion that was built up within her over the last few months of spending time with him after her release. The moment was broken, however, when she felt him resisting. Markus quickly pulled away, grasping her shoulders and pushing her a safe distance away, though still close enough to hold a private moment.
"Markus, I'm sorry, I--"
"No, I'm sorry, Kara...I just, can't. You have to understand." Markus nervously backed away, "I must go. Please...be safe tonight."
That was that. Kara was left alone, in her own pub, having awkwardly advanced at her one and only friend. She could have easily blamed the alcohol, but they both knew better than that. It was more than that. Kara loved him, as a friend and partner, but had also developed something more. She hated herself for that. She got too close to Casey and it ended up a mess. She fell for Liam and...
Merlin.
Liam.
Reaching up to her lips she watched as her partner faded away into the sea of partying people in the pub. Her heart sank. Happy New Year.
